I have four years working as a high school teacher. Five years working as an independent software developer, specializing in PHP and MYSQL Application development.
My concept of online learning
According to my understanding, online learning is the process of providing learning or education and managing the learning process through the internet. During the online learning process instructors utilize the internet by using Learning Management Systems to share resources such as video, audio, images, and text in form of lessons. To ensure that online learning is successful, we must create a community of inquiry. Both the teachers and the students need to develop a culture of being a family. Whereas an instructor becomes the head of the family. My role will be to create connections and bonds online. Each individual should be connected to me, their fellow students, the online learning content, and the real world. I believe that consistent communication through discussion forums and social network apps like WhatsApp groups can create the bond and connection vital for a successful online learning process.
My concept of online teaching
As I embark on the journey of teaching online, my primary goal is to use the strategies and experiences I have gained while I was a student myself, learning through COURSERA and the MOOC courses as well as the lessons I have gained through formal and informal training. I believe that the freedom that comes with online learning can create issues regarding the use of technology and academic cheating. To overcome this as an online instructor, I need to have proper planning, that will eliminate cheating and have proper systems to assist learners on the technology part. Part of the planning will be to create a vivid picture of what is anticipated for the entire course for the learners. I will set a road map to follow throughout the entire course. I will always encourage my learners to make individual and professional linking to the course content, through consistent engagements in discussion forums and peer-to-peer reviews. To increase the spark and energy of the discussion I will make sure I always respond to each individual student's discussion points and comments and encourage the learners to have a one-on-one chat with me to help them reach the expectation of the course. My goal as they discuss will be to encourage them to enlarge their thinking and validate their constructed ideas. I will always be available to my learners at any time through my social network applications as well as my work email.
My goals for students
In my teaching methods, I ensure that my students gain diverse skills that include critical thinking, patience, communication skills, time management, and reading and writing skills. Within the discussion forum, I always demand my learners to have critically thinking whenever they provide discussions. It takes patience to finish reading the books attached to the online learning course. To ensure that my learners develop patience I provide interactive multiple-choice questions that will ensure the students read the books and finish them. Finally, learners will gain reading and writing skills as they read through the learning content and writing of the assignments.
The methods I will use
Reaching my goals and objectives while teaching online, is a challenge, but I believe that by providing interactive learning content with different media affordances can help create a supportive classroom environment. I want my students to always want to learn in our online class, I will always provide discussion topics that will challenge them to apply themselves, sometimes demanding them within the discussions to create a short video clip explaining certain discussion points within. Some learners are not good at writing but they feel comfortable with talking, therefore will also give learners within the discussion options to post a maximum audio clip of five minutes as a substitute for typing in the discussion forum.
My interaction with students
I am a flexible teacher, and creating a healthy relationship with the student, can go a long way within the course. Learners online come from different geographical locations, and as a facilitator, I need to be able to deal with the diversity of times and cultures. At times I will want a live classroom with my online learners, it is important for me to find out the time in a day that can sweeten all the learners on the course so that all cannot miss the sessions. Again I ensure I record the sessions, because others may be facing a digital divide that includes a lack of stable internet connections. I believe that knowing all individual learner problems as they learn online can create a greater atmosphere for both the learner and the teacher.
Specific examples
Most people understand learning as the process of giving information to learners. But I strongly believe that it is indeed the starting point of teaching. When you give a learner information, they need to memorize it, hence memorization is not always learning, learning needs critical thinking. My greatest goal will be to guide the learner, motivate them to think, and help them to apply the lessons to real-life problems and be able to solve complex situations in life.
Assessing learning
I will consistently apply both formal and informal assignments and assessments within my course. To ensure that my learners go through the course content and are understanding what they are learning, will provide informal assignments, where I will create discussion topics for them to respond to, and each individual learner will have to reflect on at least five discussion topics. To examine large content coverage from the learners, I will provide formal assessments in form of authentic assignments with a rubric that will save as a guide to learners. My final projects of the course will have a connection to my learners’ future professions. Within the assessment design, I can provide different levels of challenges. I can do this by providing options on essay exams so that students can choose a question they feel they can answer well. Another alternative will be to allow students to answer essay questions in different formats. Students can write a classic essay, create a short play or create a video response. I can create assessments that will allow students to create a poster, multimedia presentation, oral presentation, or written narrative. This gives students the opportunity to use multiple media for communication. I can establish expectations and clarify what the end product must include, regardless of the format the students choose by creating a checklist or rubric.
Professional growth
Growth is unavoidable, one can grow with ignorance while others grow with proper knowledge. I can take growth like a tree. If the gardener can fail to water a tree and provide the necessary nutrients to make it grow, it does not mean the tree will not continue to grow. The important element is the productivity of the tree and the nutrient value of the fruit. A mentored online facilitator or teacher can be like a watered tree, which can grow under good conditions to flourish in the online teaching journey. To ensure I am a watered tree, I will always network with teachers who have experience in online learning and are eager to mentor me as I am embarking on my journey. I will be flexible and allow the pruning process in order to produce good fruits for my audience.
Conclusion
It is my goal and my joy to see myself transforming people’s lives through education. I am open to sharing my online learning experience with my fellow teachers in my region who may be willing to learn from me. I strongly believe that my online teaching philosophy will lead me in the construction of imperative learning connections for my learners and make them enjoy their online learning journey.
